Charlotte Moore (*Cavatica) from Raleigh, North Carolina has created a PSA against homophobia after the Twitter hashtag #ToMyUnbornChild attracted homophobes to publicly announce that they would murder their child if he or she was gay.

#ToMyUnbornChild became a trending topic on Twitter a few weeks ago, and while most people used it to write loving tweets to their future children, some homophobes decided to do just the opposite.

@Homophobes, a Twitter account that retweets homophobes to expose their ignorance, published an article of 100 extremely homophobic tweets, which gained quite a bit of attention around the web.

Charlotte Moore was inspired, and decided to write and direct a PSA using the tweets. The video was produced by Brian Lee and Nick Heim.

From the video’s description:

I got the idea on a Thursday. By Sunday, we — me, my boyfriend, and whatever friends we could find to help us — had it filmed.

It’s easy to dehumanize hate speech online because we’ve gotten so used to seeing it. We tell ourselves that it’s the product of trolls, of random, anonymous strangers.

Except they’re not. They’re real people. Many of them will be parents. And some of their children will be gay.

The homophobic tweets, which were compiled using Storify, gaining nearly 300,000 views, 4,000 tweets, and thousands of reblogs and likes from our Tumblr post and another Tumblr user. The post was covered by the Huffington PostThe New Civil Rights MovementQueertyTowleroadBuzzfeed,AmericaBLOG, and several other blogs.

Last weekend, @homophobes also published a satirical guide on how to “rid the gay” from your child.

Obama signs Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal

In a historic achievement for gay rights, President Obama signed the Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal this morning, which will allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

"This is a good day, this is a very good day." Obama said. "No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie, or look over their shoulder in order to serve the country that they love."

Last weekend, the US Senate voted to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell. On Monday, Robert Gibbs, the White House Press Secretary, tweeted:

President to sign repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on Wednesday at 9:15 AM...

The repeal is not immediately effective, reports the New York Times. The change will go into effect once Obama and defense officials certify the military's readiness.

FCK BULLIES: A new PSA by FCKH8

(Video contains explicit language.)

FCKH8 just launched their second PSA, after the success of their first PSA, which launched two months ago. Since then, $200,000 was raised to support the fight for equal marriage rights. They campaign has sold over 40,000 t-shirts.

FCKH8 is a campaign directly supporting the groups leading the fight for equality, including; American Foundation for Equal RightsEquality CaliforniaCourage CampaignLambda Legal. $5 from each shirt sold goes towards those groups.

The campaign was launched on October 10 by Luke Montgomery. Back in 1993, Luke changed his last name to “Sissyfag," in an effort to make a point about discrimination against gays and lesbians.

"FCKED up Homo H8 has a lot to do with the suicide R8! FCKH8.com is at it again with "FCK BULLIES." F-bomb dropping kids, drag queens, senior citizens & shirtless hotties take on anti-gay bullies at schools & churches as well as homo H8ing families & voters. T-shirt sales go to benefit queer youth counseling & suicide prevention."

NC Amendment one... At this point, I am embarrassed to be a part of state of North Carolina. As a 41 year old gay male, born and raised here in NC, I have grown up with a good deal of closed minded people as well a good number of people who are accepting of others. The law should never encourage prejudice and this is exactly what amendment one does, it also infringes on indivual rights. 20 years ago I faced many trials simply for being gay, it truly saddens me to see it has not changed and that even today people like me [simply for loving a different way] are forced into hiding, yet expected to continue to pay our state taxes without rights or laws to protect us. I share this here in the hopes that people will understand the importance of freedom and add their voice to those in need of support. Weather you agree or disagree with this issue... know that by allowing it to happen, you put your own freedoms that you do enjoy at risk. Freedom is lost one issue at a time, it's freedom for all or freedom for none.

very horrible and even today, gay ugandans have even been murdered by their parents and I recall this one event where a group of christians and muslims united to terrorize this one lesbian, they beat her up severly, burned her hair and acided her back. They even threatened the police that they would kill her if she ever returned to that town

And whose fault is it? Why, it's the ever-so-loving right-wing Christians at Exodus International.

Death is not a hunter unbeknownst to its prey, one is always aware that it lies in wait. Though life merely a journey to the grave, it must not be undertaken without hope. Only then will a traveler's story live on, treasured by who bid him farewell.

Here's an email I have received about the Student Non-Discrimination Act:
“We are all asked to sign a number of petitions each year in relation to various advocacy efforts. This petition for H.R. 998, the “Student Non-Discrimination Act”, is extremely important for the welfare of LGBT youth across America. Please sign and share.

You can also send a note to your United States representative or senator at POPVOX."

I REALLY recommend that everyone send a personal letter via the POPVOX link. You have to sign up with the site but it’s worth it. Especially since most people are opposing this legislation (on the site). Please, please, send a personal letter.

Here’s my letter:

I support H.R. 998: Student Non-Discrimination Act of 2011 because I know the problems bullying can have, especially in regards to the ideas of sexuality and gender.

When I was a young girl, I was constantly mocked for being “too much like a boy” and called a “dyke” and other nasty things, and had no friends because of it. I am bisexual, sure, but I never realized it until my adulthood - I refused to let myself feel towards anybody, especially other girls. I have a hard time connecting with the people around me because of my experiences with bullying, not just because of the attacks on my gender and perceived sexual orientation but also for other reasons. I think it’s time to take a stand on bullying, which is a real problem.

I’ve studied extensively into the fields of Sociology and Psychology. In a textbook, a study was cited where boys were ruthlessly attacked based on “fagginess”, and so in turn the boys would sexually harass and assault the girls to “prove their manhood” and try to stop other boys from bullying them. It’s time to put a stop to this kind of behaviour which teaches our children dangerous things that have a serious impact on society when they reach adulthood.

That’s what I think everyone needs to do in their letter - not just talk about their experience but also the impact on society this sort of crap makes. Talk about suicide and depression rates, talk not only about bullying in students but also in teachers, talk about how people are hurt based on “not acting like they should” even if they are cis and straight, talk about all kinds of bullying, talk about the impact it has on our now cynical and brutal society, talk about things that will appeal to everyone not just the LGBT-sympathetic.
